How much can I spend today, really?

Living paycheck to paycheck isn't about being bad with money — it's about not knowing your real number. The question that actually matters isn't "what's my monthly budget?" It's "how much can I spend today without ending up in the red?" This calculator answers exactly that, based on the money you have right now and the day your next paycheck lands.

The formula: (Balance − Bills before payday − Buffer) ÷ Days until payday

No bank connection. No Plaid. No signup.

Here's the difference. PocketGuard, YNAB, Copilot, EveryDollar — every popular "safe-to-spend" app makes you link your bank account through an aggregator like Plaid before it will show you a single number. After years of data-sharing scandals, plenty of people simply won't. This tool never asks. You type your numbers, the math runs in your browser, and nothing leaves your device. Privacy isn't a feature here — it's the whole point.

Why a daily number beats a monthly budget

A monthly budget is a plan. A daily safe-to-spend number is a decision you can make at the checkout. When payday is ten days out and the balance is thin, "spend $32 today" is something you can actually follow. That's why it works for tight-budget, real-life spending — it turns a stressful unknown into one clear figure.

Frequently asked questions — Safe-to-spend

Use this formula: (Current balance − Bills due before payday − Buffer you want to keep) ÷ Days until payday. Example: you have $520 in the account, $140 of bills still to clear, you want to keep a $60 cushion, and payday is 10 days away. Your safe-to-spend is (520 − 140 − 60) ÷ 10 = $32 per day. Stay at or under that and you won’t run out before payday.

On purpose. Every major "safe-to-spend" app — PocketGuard, YNAB, Copilot and the rest — requires a bank connection through Plaid or a similar aggregator. This calculator never does. You type four numbers, the math happens in your browser, nothing is sent anywhere and nothing is stored. Your money is your business. Plan & Multiply, the app, follows the same rule: you enter amounts manually, we never touch your bank login.

Anything that will still leave your account before your next paycheck: rent or a rent portion not yet paid, utilities, phone plan, subscriptions, a loan or credit-card minimum, transit, childcare. Don’t include things already debited. The goal is to set aside money you know is committed, so the daily number only reflects what’s genuinely free for groceries, gas and day-to-day life.

First, that’s information, not a verdict — and you’re far from alone. A negative number means committed costs plus buffer exceed your balance before payday. Three practical moves: (1) find the most flexible or deferrable bill before payday; (2) plan meals to avoid pricey top-up shops; (3) if you overdraft most months, our guide on getting out of overdraft shows how to break the fee cycle. Knowing the exact gap is the first step to closing it.
